Material Introduction
Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral consisting of lithium aluminum inositol silicate with the chemical formula LiAl(SiO3)2. It typically occurs in lithium-rich pegmatites and is prized for its high lithium oxide (Li2O) content. It is most famous for its gem-quality varieties, Kunzite and Hiddenite, but its primary value lies in its industrial and chemical applications.
Physically, spodumene is a hard and dense mineral with a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, making it resistant to wear but requiring high-energy grinding to achieve ultra-fine consistency. It usually appears in white, grayish-white, or pale green hues with a vitreous luster. Chemically, it possesses exceptional thermal stability and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. In its processed powder form, its performance is defined by its lithium concentration and the removal of iron impurities. High-purity spodumene is critical for the “acid roasting” process used to extract lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, which are the fundamental building blocks of modern battery technology.
