Sea shells are natural composite materials primarily consisting of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3, approx. 95-99%), typically in the form of Aragonite or Calcite, held together by a small amount of organic proteins (conchiolin). The most defining feature of many seashells is their nacreous or laminar micro-structure, where microscopic plates of calcium carbonate are stacked like bricks, providing exceptional toughness.
Physically, seashells have a Mohs hardness of 3–4, making them slightly harder and more durable than eggshells but still highly suitable for fine grinding. They often possess a natural luster and vary in color from pure white to iridescent shades. Chemically, they are highly stable and biocompatible. Once processed into ultra-fine powder, seashell particles exhibit a unique plate-like morphology and excellent whiteness. Their biological origin ensures low levels of heavy metals, making them a “clean” alternative to geological limestone in high-precision industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
