Petroleum coke, or petcoke, is a final carbon-rich solid material that derives from oil refining through a process called “delayed coking.” It is characterized by its high fixed carbon content, low ash, and varying levels of sulfur and metals depending on the source crude oil. It primarily exists in two forms: Sponge Coke, used mainly for fuel and anodes, and Needle Coke, a high-value variety with a crystalline structure used for graphite electrodes.
Physically, petcoke is hard and brittle with a Mohs hardness of 3–4, making it suitable for grinding into fine powders with high caloric value. Chemically, it is highly stable but can be activated or calcined to enhance its electrical conductivity and density.
