Material Introduction
Eggshells are primarily composed of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3, approx. 94-97%), along with a small amount of magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and a specialized organic protein matrix. The structure is inherently porous, designed by nature for gas exchange, which gives the processed powder a higher specific surface area than traditional mineral-based limestone.
Physically, eggshells have a Mohs hardness of 3, making them easy to process into ultra-fine powders. They are naturally white or off-white. Chemically, the “bio-calcium” in eggshells is more easily absorbed by biological systems than geological calcium, making it highly valuable for nutrition. Once processed into fine powder, it exhibits excellent dispersibility and biodegradability. Its performance as a functional filler is defined by its low heavy metal content and the preservation of its micro-porous structure, which allows it to function as an effective adsorbent for heavy metals and a reinforcing agent in bio-plastics.
