Limestone Hammer Mill: Its Role Before Powder Grinding

News Article 450

Large limestone lumps entering a powder production line present a feed size problem. The downstream mill has its own feed requirements, and front-end crushing must reduce the raw material to a suitable size for further processing. When discussing a limestone hammer mill, this pre-crushing duty should be separated from the fineness requirements of the finished limestone powder.

In Clirik's limestone grinding approach, a hammer crusher can serve as front-end pre-crushing equipment. Its role here is material preparation. The finished powder's particle size distribution also involves subsequent grinding and classification. Understanding this process position helps establish how the equipment fits into the full production line.

The crusher outlet feeds the next stage

Crushing reduces the size of large lumps; grinding continues processing to the target fineness. The stages connect, but their output goals differ. Crushed particles may become mill feed without yet being a finished fine powder product.

At this connection, the downstream mill's maximum allowable feed size is a direct requirement. The raw material's maximum lump size and feed size distribution must be considered alongside the mill's feed requirements. A crushing arrangement that can process the raw stone does not automatically establish that all its discharge suits the next mill.

Classification controls finished product size

After grinding, classification separates sufficiently fine powder from the system. In a closed circuit, coarse powder returns for further grinding. Recirculation helps control the coarse end of the product distribution, while increasing the circulating load and the loads on the fan and dust collection stages.

The finished fineness stated for a mill describes the grinding stage's target. In a powder production line, particles discharged from front-end crushing must still pass through grinding and classification to become a finished product with the agreed particle size distribution. The connection requirements between machines and the final product requirements should be specified separately.

A mesh number alone is insufficient to define the product. d50, d97, top particle size or sieve residue can further specify the size target. These describe finished product requirements and differ from raw stone lump size and allowable mill feed size; they cannot replace one another.

Raw material conditions affect the connection

Limestone consists mainly of calcium carbonate. Dolomite, quartz, clay and moisture vary between deposits. These conditions affect hardness, abrasiveness, equipment load and product quality. The name “limestone” alone cannot determine the full line configuration.

Drying enters the process arrangement when moisture is high, the material tends to adhere, or low final moisture is required. Crushing and drying perform different duties: crushing addresses lump size, while drying addresses moisture conditions. Smaller crusher discharge cannot replace an assessment of feed moisture.

Where higher purity is required, deposit impurities impose another constraint. Grinding cannot replace purification; reducing stone size does not automatically remove its impurities.

Assessing pre-crushing through feed requirements

A complete powder production system also includes feeding, grinding, classification, dust collection and conveying. Output, product size, moisture and energy consumption must be assessed under the system's conditions. A crusher's individual processing capacity does not represent the entire line's output of compliant powder.

For front-end hammer crushing, the assessment can focus on one defined connection: under the actual limestone feed conditions, does its discharge meet the downstream mill's allowable feed requirements? Once that condition is met, grinding and classification take responsibility for achieving the agreed finished product fineness.
