What really affects the selection is the intended use, raw material condition, target particle size, and acceptance method. Under the same name, projects may face drilling fluids, fillers, or high-density concrete, and the system boundaries will also change accordingly.

Application determines finished product requirements

Barite can be used as a weighting material for drilling fluids, as a filler or weight-increasing material for coatings, plastics, etc., and may also be used as a high-density concrete aggregate.

Drilling-grade barite focuses on density, particle size distribution, and water-soluble alkaline earth metals. At the same time, it is necessary to control the proportion of residual particles above 75 μm and particles below 6 μm, and not just the average particle size or mesh size. The uses of fillers usually also depend on whiteness, purity, oil absorption, moisture content, and color stability. Barite for high-density concrete may be primarily crushed and sieved, and does not necessarily require ultrafine grinding.

Different applications require different problems to be solved in the grinding section: some focus on particle size distribution, while others must first address grade, density, or moisture content.

Pre-processing of raw material status

The conditions for raw ore, concentrate after beneficiation, and dried materials that have met grade requirements are different before entering the grinding section. At a minimum, the mineral source, BaSO₄ content, gangue composition, feed particle size, moisture content, and abrasiveness must be verified. Different mineral sources, even if they have the same name, may have different grades, densities, grindability, and wear characteristics.

When there is a lot of gangue, or the grade and density do not meet the requirements, the beneficiation links such as washing, gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation should be evaluated separately. Increasing the power of the grinding mill cannot replace mineral processing. When the raw materials have high moisture content or are prone to adhesion, pre-drying, hot air, feeding stability, pipeline anti-condensation, and dust collection load must also be evaluated.

Compare device categories by target granularity

For dry grinding of conventional fineness, you can start by comparing Raymond mills or pendulum roller mills. They are used in conventional fineness scenarios, where final feed, capacity, and energy consumption are still determined by the specific model and material conditions.

Vertical roller mills are another candidate when continuous grinding or processing volume is large. Whether barite is suitable should be determined by combining the raw material moisture content, hardness, target particle size, wear, and test results.

When products require finer powder or more stringent particle size distribution requirements, fine sub-grade systems such as micro-powder grinding and ultra-fine vertical grinding are more worthy of comparison. At this point, we cannot just focus on the number of eyes; we must also look at the grading accuracy, cycle load, temperature rise, wear, and powder agglomeration control.

If the target particle size is very fine, or the product is more sensitive to mechanical contact contamination, air jet milling can be included in the comparison. Compressed air, energy consumption, processing volume, system dust collection, and product temperature must all be checked separately.

Compare the entire line with the sample validation

A complete barite grinding line may include crushing, screening, feeding, drying, grinding, grading, fans, dust collection, conveying, storage, packaging, and control systems. The supply boundaries of the plan should be listed item by item, and a single main unit should not be treated as an entire production line.

When confirming the model, representative ore samples should be used to verify feed conditions, target products, production capacity, particle size distribution, energy consumption, temperature rise, and wear. Drilling-grade projects must also include density, residue above 75 μm, particle ratio below 6 μm, and corresponding detection methods in the acceptance.

Providing only “barite, tonnage, mesh size” is insufficient to determine whether the equipment is compatible; the application, mineral source, feed particle size, moisture content, target particle size distribution, and acceptance method are the basic prerequisites for comparing models.

In barite projects, barite grinding mill is more of a general term for equipment categories than a fixed model.
